Nepal is in mourning after renowned mountaineer Nirmal Purja, also known as ‘Nims Dai’, and nine other climbers lost their lives in an avalanche on Pakistan’s 8,051-meter-high Broad Peak.
The incident has sent shockwaves across the international mountaineering community, with tributes pouring in from world leaders, politicians, and fellow climbers.
Condolences Pour In
Nepal’s Prime Minister Balendra Shah expressed his condolences, stating that Nirmal Purja’s bravery, dedication, and contributions to Nepal’s international reputation will remain an inspiration forever.
‘Mountaineering is not just about reaching the summit, but about courage, discipline, sacrifice, and the ultimate expression of self-confidence,’ Prime Minister Shah wrote on social media.
Other politicians, including Ravi Lamichhane, the chairman of the Rastriya Swatantra Party, and Gagan Kumar Thapa, the president of the Nepali Congress, also paid their respects to Nirmal Purja.
A Legacy of Courage and Perseverance
Nirmal Purja, who was born on July 25, 1983, in Dana village, Myagdi, had a remarkable career as a mountaineer. He was the first Nepali to be selected for the British Royal Navy’s Special Boat Service (SBS).
In 2019, he set a new world record by climbing all 14 eight-thousand-meter peaks in just six months and six days. This achievement broke the previous seven-year-old record and took Nepal to new heights in the world of mountaineering.
Nirmal Purja’s legacy extends beyond his personal achievements. He was a pioneer in promoting Nepal’s adventure tourism and inspiring a new generation of Nepali climbers.
His death has left a void in the mountaineering community, but his courage, leadership, and perseverance will continue to inspire people around the world.
As Deepak Raj Joshi, the former CEO of the Nepal Tourism Board, said, ‘Nims Dai was not just a mountaineer, but a friend who inspired dreams.’
Nirmal Purja’s body may be gone, but his indomitable spirit, dedication, and contributions to mountaineering history will live on forever.
Our heartfelt condolences go out to the families of all the climbers who lost their lives in the Broad Peak avalanche.
