Ninety-One Spots in Bagmati Province Prone to Accidents

At least 91 locations in 10 districts of Bagmati Province, excluding the valley, have been identified as accident-prone areas. According to a three-year data released by the Nepal Police Road Safety and Traffic Management Office in Ramnagar, Chitwan, passenger accidents pose a serious safety challenge in the province.

Geographically, Chitwan, Dhading, and Makwanpur districts are considered highly sensitive to accidents. Among the 91 accident-prone ‘black spots’ in the province, 17 are in Chitwan, 16 in Dhading, 14 in Sindhuli, and 12 in Makwanpur. There are 11 in Kavre, eight in Nuwakot, four each in Rasuwa and Ramechhap, three in Sindhupalchok, and two in Dolakha, according to Dil Narayan Pande, chief of the office and police inspector.

Mr. Pande said that a location is considered accident-prone if more than five people have died in accidents there. In the past three years, 5,872 passenger accidents have resulted in 959 deaths and 11,699 injuries. In the fiscal year 2080/81, 315 people died, 304 in 2081/82, and 340 in 2082/83.

According to Mr. Pande, the time between 12 pm and 6 pm is the most accident-prone. The province has a road network of over 14,456 kilometers and more than 173,000 vehicles, with 332 traffic police personnel responsible for managing them. On average, one traffic police officer has to monitor 43.55 kilometers of road and 552 vehicles.

Despite limited manpower, the traffic police have been strictly enforcing traffic rules, taking action against 90,983 vehicles last year and collecting revenue of over nine crore three lakh rupees. To reduce accidents, the police have been using technology such as speed guns, ANPR cameras, digital challans, and the ‘Transport Communication App’, as well as conducting over 26,000 awareness programs.
