Nepal’s cardamom exports have seen a significant increase, with the Kankadbhitta customs office reporting a rise of 64.65% in the export of the spice.
According to the office, the total export of cardamom during the last fiscal year 2082/83 was worth Rs 12.63 billion, up from Rs 7.67 billion in the previous year.
The increase in export is attributed to the growing demand for Nepali cardamom in the international market. The spice is mainly produced in the eastern hilly districts of Nepal and is a major cash crop for farmers.
The export of cardamom has not only increased the income of farmers but has also contributed to the country’s foreign exchange earnings.
Export Volume Also Rises
The volume of cardamom exported during the last fiscal year was 6.39 million kg, up from 4.29 million kg in the previous year.
According to Mankal Rai, information officer and customs officer at the Kankadbhitta customs office, the increase in export is due to the growing demand for Nepali cardamom in the international market.
Rai added that if production is increased, quality is improved, and the market is expanded, cardamom exports are likely to increase further in the coming years.
