Nirmal Purja, a renowned Nepali mountaineer, has died in an avalanche on the Broad Peak mountain in Pakistan. The news has sent shockwaves across Nepal, with the Annapurna Rural Municipality and the Dhaulagiri Rural Municipality-4 declaring a day of mourning.
The Annapurna Rural Municipality has announced that all non-essential offices, ward offices, health institutions, and community schools will be closed as a mark of respect. The municipality has also announced plans to build a statue in Purja’s honor. Chairman Bharat Kumar Pun said that Purja’s contribution to promoting Nepali mountaineering at the global level will always be remembered.
The Dhaulagiri Rural Municipality-4 has also declared a day of mourning in honor of Purja. Ward Chairman Yam Prasad Gharti said that the decision was made to pay tribute to Purja’s contribution and bravery, as the Dhaulagiri mountain is located in the same ward.
Prem Prasad Pun, chairman of the Dhaulagiri Rural Municipality, has also issued a condolence statement, paying tribute to Purja and his climbing team.
