A helicopter search operation is underway to locate a team of climbers, including Nepali mountaineer Nirmal Purja, who went missing on Pakistan’s Broad Peak mountain.
The team of 10 climbers, including one American, one Chinese, one Omani, and five Nepalis, lost contact after being hit by an avalanche on Thursday afternoon, according to Pakistani mountaineering officials.
‘A helicopter has taken off from Skardu at 8 am this morning for a search and rescue operation in the Broad Peak area,’ said Mingma Sherpa, a Nepali mountaineer and member of the country’s parliament.
Broad Peak, located in the Karakoram mountain range, is the 12th highest mountain in the world, standing at 8,047 meters tall.
The search operation comes after the team, led by Nirmal Purja, failed to make contact after the avalanche hit.
The incident has raised concerns about the safety of climbers in the region, with many calling for improved rescue operations and safety measures.
