A massive avalanche on Broad Peak in Pakistan’s Karakoram mountain range has left 10 climbers, including renowned Nepali mountaineer Nirmal Purja, uncontactable.
According to the Pakistan Alpine Club, the avalanche occurred on Thursday afternoon as the team was ascending the 8,047-meter peak. Initial reports indicate that the team consisted of climbers from Pakistan, Oman, China, the US, and Nepal, including Nirmal Purja.
The Pakistan Alpine Club has expressed serious concern over the incident and has coordinated with government agencies and relevant authorities to intensify the search and rescue operation. The club has stated that all available rescue resources, including helicopters, will be deployed as soon as the weather and operational conditions permit.
Nirmal Purja, who set a world record in 2019 by climbing all 14 peaks above 8,000 meters in just over six months, is among the missing climbers. The Pakistan Alpine Club has reported that contact with the entire team was lost after the avalanche, and no official information is available on their current status.
The rescue team is currently waiting for an improvement in the weather to launch a more effective search and rescue operation.
