A second person has died following the recent incident in Captainganj, Sunsari, Nepal. Jayaprakash Mehta, 22, from Devanagunj-3, succumbed to his injuries on Thursday while undergoing treatment at Neuro Hospital in Biratnagar.
Mehta had suffered a serious injury to his abdomen after being shot by the Armed Police Force. He underwent surgery on Monday but remained in critical condition and was placed on a ventilator. His death was confirmed by Dr. Makendra Kumar Mishra, Information Officer of Morang Police, at 1:24 pm on Thursday.
This incident brings the total number of fatalities to two. Earlier, Omprakash Mehta, 25, from Devanagunj-4, had died on Sunday night shortly after being taken to the hospital for treatment.
The bodies of both victims are currently at the hospital, according to the police. The incident occurred on Sunday night when a dispute between two groups in Captainganj turned violent, prompting the Armed Police Force to open fire. Ten people were injured in the incident, with two confirmed dead and eight others undergoing treatment at various hospitals in Biratnagar.
The condition of some of the injured remains critical, according to the hospital. Following the shooting, incidents of arson, vandalism, looting, and targeted attacks were reported in various parts of Sunsari on Monday and Tuesday. A curfew was subsequently imposed by the local administration, which remains in effect despite the situation gradually returning to normal.
