Nepal Home Minister Agrees to Probe into Police Firing Incident

Nepal’s Home Minister Sudhan Gurung has agreed to a probe into the police firing incident in Devanagunj, Sunsari, which resulted in the death of two youths.

Minister Gurung and Health Minister Nisha Mehata visited the injured at three hospitals in Biratnagar on Thursday and held talks with the local administration and the families of the victims.

According to Sunsari’s Chief District Officer Ishwori Prasad Aryal, a seven-point agreement was reached between the government and the victims’ families after a long discussion.

Probe into Police Firing

The agreement includes a provision for a fair and effective investigation into the incident and action against those found guilty.

The government has also agreed to provide Rs 1 million in relief to each of the victims’ families and a job to a member of each family.

The incident occurred on the night of Ashar 10 when police opened fire on a group of people, resulting in the death of two youths, Om Prakash Mehata and Jay Prakash Mehata.

The victims’ families had been demanding a probe into the incident and action against those responsible.

The agreement also includes a provision for the construction of a memorial park in the victims’ memory and the completion of the last rites of the deceased on Ashar 15.
