Nepal Government Shuts Down Stalls in Public Library Over Unpaid Rent

Kathmandu Valley Public Library, a popular public library in Nepal, has been forced to shut down several stalls within its premises due to non-payment of rent. The decision was made by the government following the library’s failure to pay the rent despite repeated warnings.

According to the Ministry of Women, Children, and Social Welfare, the library had been asked to pay the outstanding rent of NPR 2.9 million (approximately USD 23,000) by Chaitra 2082 (mid-April 2025). However, despite several reminders and warnings, the library failed to make the payment, prompting the government to take action.

The ministry stated that the decision to shut down the stalls was made to protect public property, enforce legal obligations, and ensure effective management of the library’s assets. The ministry also clarified that the government has no intention of closing down the library itself but aims to restructure and improve its management to provide better services to the public.

The ministry has urged all institutions and organizations using public property to fulfill their obligations as per the agreement and the law. The government’s decision has affected several stalls within the library, including those providing essential services to the public.
