A case has been filed against Homprakash Chaudhary (Kurmi), the vice-chairman of Shuddhodhan Village Council in Kapilvastu, by the Commission for the Investigation of Abuse of Authority (CIAA) on charges of corruption.
According to the CIAA, Chaudhary is accused of taking a bribe of five lakh rupees (approximately $4,200 USD) in exchange for providing a job at the village council. The case was filed at the Special Court in Kathmandu on Thursday.
The CIAA alleges that Chaudhary and Suresh Khar, the then-MIS operator, were involved in misusing funds allocated for the ‘Program Against Judicial Inequality’ under the annual program approved for the fiscal year 2079/80. An investigation found that the funds were used as a bribe.
It is reported that Khar, who was responsible for implementing the program, had received six lakh rupees (approximately $5,000 USD) in advance and had deposited five lakh rupees into Chaudhary’s bank account after the funds were released.
The CIAA has accused Chaudhary and Khar of not implementing the program despite receiving the funds and instead sharing the money among themselves.
The five lakh rupees deposited into Chaudhary’s bank account was found to have been transferred through a check in the name of a office assistant.
The CIAA has demanded that both defendants be fined five lakh rupees and be sentenced to imprisonment under the Corruption Prevention Act, 2059. The agency has also sought the confiscation of the five lakh rupees received as a bribe.
