Tokyo has witnessed a historic shift in its population, with the number of Japanese citizens dropping below 120 million for the first time in 42 years.
According to the latest government statistics released on Wednesday, the number of Japanese citizens as of January 1, 2026, stands at 119,736,483, marking a decline of 917,000 compared to the previous year.
This represents the largest annual decline since comparable records began in 1968, according to the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications.
Regional Variations
Among Japan’s 47 prefectures, only Tokyo saw a slight increase of 0.09% in its Japanese population.
In contrast, the number of foreign residents in Japan has surged by 354,000 to reach a record high of 4,031,159, the highest since records began in 2013.
Total Population
When including foreign residents, Japan’s total population stands at 123,767,642, a decline of approximately 563,000 compared to the previous year.
