Accountability Watch Committee Urges Probe into Sunsari-Siraha Violence

The Accountability Watch Committee (AWC) has expressed serious concern over the recent violent incidents in Sunsari and Siraha districts.

In a statement issued on Friday, the committee called on the government to adopt durable and human rights-friendly solutions to address the situation.

The committee urged for an impartial investigation into the incidents, which it said had resulted in loss of life and property of civilians due to the excessive use of force in the name of controlling the violence.

The statement noted that such incidents had raised questions about social harmony, public security, and the rule of law, and emphasized that violence, communal hatred, and taking the law into one’s hands were unacceptable under any pretext.

The AWC demanded that an independent, impartial, and fact-based investigation be conducted to reveal the actual causes of the incidents, the responsible individuals, and the role of state agencies, and that the report be made public.

It also stressed the need to ensure justice and adequate compensation for the victims.

Noting that religious diversity is Nepal’s strength, the committee suggested that the government promote interfaith dialogue, control hate speech, increase awareness, and develop mechanisms for resolving disputes at an early stage.

The AWC also appealed to all parties to exercise restraint and avoid spreading rumors.
