A new government is set to be formed in Nepal’s Far-West Province, following an agreement between the Nepal Communist Party (NCP) and the Communist Party of Nepal (Unified Marxist-Leninist) (CPN-UML). The agreement, reached between NCP Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ and CPN-UML Chairman KP Sharma Oli, paves the way for the formation of a new government in the province.
According to the agreement, the NCP will lead the new government, with Khagaraj Bhatta, the party’s parliamentary leader, set to become the new Chief Minister. The CPN-UML will support the new government from outside.
The agreement was reached after the CPN-UML withdrew its support from the current government, led by Chief Minister Kamal Bahadur Shah, on Ashar 31, 2083. Shah has been left with two options: to seek a vote of confidence or to resign.
The NCP has formed a three-member task force, comprising Bhannu Bhakta Joshi, Hari Chaudhary ‘Utsav’, and Khagaraj Bhatta, to finalize the names of the new ministers. The task force will consult with the party’s central leadership and finalize the names of the ministers.
The new government is expected to be formed soon, with the NCP set to get three ministerial portfolios, including the Chief Minister’s post, and the CPN-UML set to get two portfolios.
Chief Minister Shah has said that he will take a decision on whether to seek a vote of confidence or to resign within the next few days. He has been holding consultations with his party leaders and is expected to make an announcement soon.
