Nepal PM Vows to Restore Social Harmony Amid Tensions

Nepal’s Prime Minister Balendra Shah has assured that the government is working diligently to resolve the recent sensitive situation in Sunsari and other districts, ensure citizens’ safety, and strengthen social harmony.

During a meeting with lawmakers from the Madhes Province at the Prime Minister’s Office in Singh Durbar on Friday, PM Shah informed that all security and administrative mechanisms of the state have been activated with high alertness, and urged citizens not to fall prey to rumors and to maintain restraint.

Government Priorities

PM Shah stated that the government’s top priority is to immediately reach the affected citizens, provide them with security guarantees, and conduct an impartial investigation into the incidents.

He added that the government has adopted a multi-faceted strategy to make peace and security effective, without letting the situation become more complicated.

Lawmakers’ Role

During the meeting, PM Shah urged the lawmakers to visit their respective constituencies, engage in direct dialogue with citizens, build trust, and play a coordinating role between the state and the people.

He emphasized that it is the primary responsibility of people’s representatives to reach out to the citizens in times of crisis and share their joys and sorrows.

The lawmakers expressed their commitment to follow the PM’s call and immediately visit their constituencies to create an environment of peace, harmony, and trust.

They also appreciated PM Shah’s address to the nation on Thursday, saying it had a positive impact on the citizens, especially in the affected areas, and helped build trust and confidence.

Long-term Peace and Harmony

During the meeting, the lawmakers suggested that the government should maintain continuous dialogue with local leaders, civil society, intellectuals, and political parties to ensure long-term peace and social harmony at the local level.

They also emphasized the need to promote messages of religious tolerance and social unity in tense and surrounding areas, and to launch awareness campaigns at the local level to protect young people from rumors and misinformation spreading on social media.
