A sudden flood in northwest China has claimed the lives of 25 people, with 23 others injured, according to official reports. The death toll was updated a week after the incident, which occurred in a popular tourist area.
The flood hit the ‘Suvangshimen Scenic Area’ on July 26, where tourists had gathered for a day of camping. Initially, 10 deaths and 23 injuries were reported. However, after the National Disaster Reduction Commission announced an investigation into the incident, the updated death toll was made public.
The Suvangshimen area, located in the mountainous region of southern Gansu Province, is known for its natural stone arches, high-altitude grasslands, and mountain streams. Videos shared on social media showed a rapid flood sweeping through the valley, where tents and vehicles were parked.
This summer, China has been severely affected by extreme weather events. In July, a tornado in Hubei Province killed at least 11 people. Additionally, six people died in southern Guangxi after a dam burst following heavy rainfall, and over 130,000 people were relocated to safe areas. In Gansu Province’s Dangchang County, 21 people lost their lives in a landslide in July.
