A massive police operation at the residence of a prominent businessman in Biratnagar has raised concerns over the intelligence gathering mechanism of the Nepal Police.
On the morning of Ashar 18, a large team of security personnel, led by Morang Police Chief, Superintendent of Police (SP) Kavita Katwal, raided the ‘Debenara Mundada Niwas’ in Biratnagar-7, the residence of Debenara Group founder Beni Gopal Mundada.
The police claimed that they had received ‘special information’ about the presence of illegal substances at the Mundada residence. However, after a thorough search of the premises, including the house, office, and personal belongings, no incriminating evidence was found.
The search operation, which lasted for over five hours, ended with the police leaving empty-handed. The incident has sparked concerns over the police’s intelligence gathering mechanism and the potential for harassment of businessmen.
Nepal Police’s former DIG Hemant Thapa expressed concerns over the police’s actions, stating that such operations could damage the reputation of the police and the government. He emphasized the need for reliable intelligence and proper investigation before conducting such raids.
The incident has also been condemned by the Nepal Chamber of Commerce and Industry, which has demanded an explanation from the police and the government. The chamber has expressed concerns over the potential impact on the business community and the economy.
