Nepal Arrests Foreign Ministry Official Over Passport Scandal

A high-ranking official at Nepal’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has been arrested on charges of corruption. Pushparaj Bhattarai, the ministry’s joint secretary, was taken into custody by the police on Monday.

According to the Central Investigation Bureau (CIB), Bhattarai was arrested under the Passport Act. CIB spokesperson SSP Anupam Shamsher Rana said that Bhattarai was accused of issuing travel permits to Tibetan refugees in exchange for financial benefits while serving as a section officer in 2068 BS (2011-2012 AD).

The arrest is part of an ongoing investigation into corruption within the foreign ministry. Bhattarai’s detention has sent shockwaves through the government, with many calling for greater transparency and accountability within the ministry.
