A corruption case has been filed against five individuals, including the former chairperson of Gadhawa Municipality in Dang, Sahjaran Yadav Ahir, for allegedly embezzling revenue from the extraction of riverbed materials.
The Commission for the Investigation of Abuse of Authority (CIAA) stated that an investigation found that the municipality had awarded a tender for the collection and disposal of riverbed materials in wards 1 and 2 during the fiscal year 2076/77, but the contract was not signed with the contractor, and instead, a cash receipt with a seal was issued from the office, resulting in a large amount of revenue being embezzled.
The CIAA has filed a case against Ahir, former chief administrative officer Lal Bahadur Yogi, former revenue branch chief assistant fifth-class Shambhu Chaudhary, Sagoon Construction and Engineering Pvt. Ltd. Butwal 13 Rupandehi, and the company’s managing director Shahadev Khadka and representative Bikas Pun.
The accused have been charged with violating Section 7 of the Corruption Prevention Act, 2059, and a fine of Rs 1.41 million has been imposed on them.
According to the CIAA, the municipality had awarded a contract worth Rs 2.82 million to Sagoon Construction and Engineering Pvt. Ltd. for the extraction of riverbed materials from the Rapti River area in ward 1, but the company was given a tax exemption of Rs 1.41 million through mutual agreement, which is against the law.
The CIAA has stated that the accused had misused their positions and authority to embezzle government revenue and cause loss to the state.
